The day to do it was Saturday 22nd February 2014. I spent the whole week leading up to it checking the weather forecast. It looked good, not very warm but dry and sunny. My aim was to ride at 25kph and to make 3 stops of 15 minutes each for coffee and cake.
5th March 2014
There has been 2 days of heavy snowfall and sub zero temperatures. The sun will return tomorrow and with it warm temperatures.
Col du Tourmalet should be open on or around Friday 16th May 2014.
Spring time has arrived in the Pyrénées. There is still the occasional cold day and up on the cols there was fresh snow today and last night. There is plenty of snow for the skiers, but nothing compared to last year. In another 8 weeks it will be mostly gone.
Stage 18 of the 2014 Tour de France will be from Pau to Hautacam on Thursday 24th July and L'Etape du Tour Mondovélo on 20th July.
Stage 18 Thursday 24th July. Pau-Hautacam
Km 38.5 - Côte de Benejacq - 2.6 km climb to 6.9 % - Category 3
Km 67.0 - Loucrup - 2.0 km climb to 6.9 % - Category 3
Km 106.0 - Col du Tourmalet- 17.7 km climb to 7.5 % - Category HC
Km 156.0 - Hautacam - 14.4 km climb to 7.5 % - Category HC
There is still lots of snow on the mountains (happy skiers). Down in the valley it feels like spring, with temps up to 17c and flowers in the garden. The next 3 weeks are the busiest of the ski season, after that the roads will be deserted for several months before the summer season starts. Quiet roads and warm spring weather, perfect! The long term weather forecast suggests that the worst of winter is over with temperatures over the next 2 weeks set to go into the 20's. Fingers crossed, Col du Tourmalet could be open in 10 or 11 weeks time.
As Le Tour will be doing Hautacam this year and I see it every time I look out the window, I've decided to give it lots of attention. My mad plan is to ride Hautacam 100 times this year.
I have ridden it 8 times only 92 to go.

It's been raining heavily for the past 3 days. There is some flooding down river and a number of roads have been closed. The ski stations have had up to 1m of fresh snow overnight and the avalanche risk in the mountains is 5 of 5. The rain is due to ease this afternoon. I think I'll be having a day of the bike today.
Here are a few photos from my ride up Hautacam today. Taken with the phone so not great quality. There was fresh snow last night making the road was dodgy in places. It was an uneventful ride in beautiful sunshine.
